MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell harshly criticized President Donald Trump for his series of confusing and evasive answers regarding who authorized the suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine.
On his show The Last Word, O’Donnell slammed Trump’s response—“I haven’t thought about it”—when pressed on the decision to halt weapons shipments to the country resisting Russian invasion, a move that was later reversed.
“If there’s a shred of truth in anything that Donald Trump said, it would be, ‘Well, I haven’t thought about it.’ And that is the truth of everything Donald Trump does and doesn’t do as president,” O’Donnell said.
“It takes Trumpian stupidity to say something like that. And when you’re as stupid as Donald Trump, you have no idea how stupid your stupidity sounds. Donald Trump is trapped in his stupidity. There is no way he can fake being smart about anything, not even his lifetime passion and supposed area of greatest expertise—golf, which he simply lies about.”
The anchor also condemned Trump’s “colossal stupidity” after the president replied “I don’t know, you tell me” when CNN’s Kaitlan Collins asked who had authorized the suspension of military aid to Ukraine without his approval. The decision is widely reported to have been made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who sat next to Trump during the White House press briefing.
During Wednesday’s press briefing, The New York Times reporter Shawn McCreesh followed up, asking if Trump had figured out who paused the shipments. Trump answered, “I haven’t thought about it, because we’re looking at Ukraine right now and munitions, but no, I’ve not gone into it.”
Pressed further about what it said about his administration that such a major decision was made without his knowledge, Trump said, “I would know if a decision was made. I will know. I’ll be the first to know. In fact, most likely I gave the order, but I haven’t done that yet.”
O’Donnell dismissed Trump’s explanation as nonsensical, reiterating his criticism of the previous day’s “you tell me” response. “If you don’t think that string of English words made any sense, you are correct. It did not make any sense,” he said.
