In a deeply troubling incident, legendary South Carolina women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley is recovering after sustaining injuries during a robbery attack that occurred late Thursday night in downtown Columbia, South Carolina.

According to initial police reports, Staley was walking to her car after a charity event when two assailants confronted her in what authorities believe was a targeted mugging.

Coach Staley, 54, reportedly attempted to protect herself and her belongings during the confrontation but suffered injuries to her left arm and shoulder. She was immediately taken to a local hospital, where she remains in stable condition.
