Friends Meryl Streep, Martin Short ‘seemed together’ at ‘Only Murders’ premiere

Meryl Streep and Martin Short say they’re just friends — but that isn’t doing much to quell chatter, and high hopes, that the stars could be Hollywood’s latest couple.

The “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars went viral (again) last week after a video captured them holding hands at their show’s premiere party on the Paramount lot in Hollywood.

Spies told us their “close friendship” was evident inside the party too.

Meryl Streep and Martin Short arrived at the premiere’s afterparty on Aug. 22 holding hands.

Reps for the duo have said they’re just friends.

Streep and Short’s characters are involved in the show. Their chemistry off camera, however, led one breathless insider at the party to believe, “It’s gotta be more than a ‘showmance.’ There is definitely something there.”

Either way, they weren’t exactly glued to the hip the whole night!

We’re told Short “was attentive” when they were together. “They walked in holding hands, and were in great spirits, laughing. It was very sweet and cute,” the source added.

But the pair left the party separately.

Streep posed at the bash with castmates Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Short.

A rep for Streep told us, “They are just friends.”

Short’s rep did not get back to us — but previously described their relationship as “very good friends, nothing more” to People back in January.

On Monday, Short spoke about his “love” for Streep to Mona Kosar Abdi of “Extra” when asked about their off-screen friendship.

“I think it’s been a friendship that always grows if you work with someone and love that person,” Short said.

Gomez attended the afterparty with boyfriend Benny Blanco.

Meanwhile, it’s clear that the show’s star Selena Gomez and her confirmed beau, Benny Blanco, are very much together.

The couple held court with her sister at their private table, where singer Chappell Roan popped by to greet the trio and “hugs were given to Selena and Benny,” our insider said.

Steve Martin, Jane Lynch and Zach Galifianakis were also celebrating the hit Hulu series, which returns for its fourth season to Hulu on Tuesday.
