BREAKING: Utah becomes the first U.S. state to ban Pride flags in both public schools and government buildings

Cox, aunque expresó preocupaciones serias sobre la política, optó por no vetarla, anticipando que la mayoría republicana en la legislatura la habría anulado. En una carta a los líderes legislativos, defendió la intención de mantener las aulas políticamente neutrales, pero criticó que la ley excediera su propósito al regular gobiernos locales. Esta decisión ha sido recibida con alivio por algunos conservadores que ven las banderas del Orgullo como símbolos políticos, mientras que grupos de derechos humanos, como la ACLU de Utah, la califican de un ataque a la libertad de expresión y un intento de invisibilizar a la comunidad LGBTIQ+.

En Salt Lake City, un bastión liberal, las autoridades han iluminado edificios con luces arcoíris en protesta, desafiando la nueva norma. La tradición de izar la bandera del Orgullo durante junio, mes del orgullo, ahora está en riesgo, lo que ha llevado al Utah Pride Center a planificar manifestaciones, incluida una con una bandera transgénero de 200 pies. El anuncio coincide con la salida del Festival de Sundance de Utah hacia Colorado, un movimiento que algunos vinculan a este clima hostil.

La prohibición no se limita a las banderas LGBTIQ+, también afecta a banderas políticas como las de “Make America Great Again” de Trump, lo que ha generado debates sobre consistencia. Sin embargo, críticos señalan que el enfoque en las banderas del Orgullo sugiere un objetivo específico. En Vietnam, donde los temas de derechos LGBTIQ+ ganan atención, las redes sociales reflejan división: algunos apoyan la neutralidad, otros ven discriminación. Con más estados como Idaho y Florida considerando medidas similares, esta ley de Utah podría ser el preludio de un cambio nacional, avivando las tensiones culturales en un país ya polarizado. La comunidad LGBTIQ+ y sus aliados preparan estrategias legales, mientras el impacto a largo plazo sigue siendo incierto en un contexto donde la salud política y social del estado está en juego.
