At 82, EDDIE LEVERT Reveals DARK SECRETS From ‘The O’Jays… SEE More:

Eddie Levert, the iconic frontman of The O’Jays, has led a life that embodies both extraordinary success and profound tragedy. As a member of one of the most influential R&B groups in history, his soulful melodies have left an indelible mark on music. Yet, behind the glitz and glamour of fame lies a story filled with heartbreak, mystery, and untold struggles.

The O’Jays’ journey began in the late 1950s in Canton, Ohio, when Eddie and his high school friends Walter Williams, William Powell, Bobby Massie, and Bill Isles found solace in music amid a racially divided America. Originally called The Triumphs and later The Mascots, they eventually became The O’Jays, a name chosen to honor DJ Eddie O’Jay, who supported their budding career.

Despite their talent, the group faced significant challenges breaking into an industry rife with exploitation, particularly for Black artists. Shady managers and unfair record deals often left them struggling financially, even as their music gained popularity.

One of the darkest chapters in The O’Jays’ history unfolded in the 1970s with the mysterious disappearance of guitarist Frank “Frankie” Little Jr. Frankie was not only a bandmate but a close friend and contributor to the group’s early sound. In 1982, decades after his disappearance, partial human remains were discovered in Twinsburg, Ohio, inside a garbage bag.

It wasn’t until 2019 that advances in DNA technology finally identified the remains as those of Frankie. Investigators determined his death was a homicide, but the circumstances remain unclear. For Eddie Levert, the discovery reopened old wounds, forcing him to relive the loss of someone integral to his musical journey.

Eddie’s life has been marked by personal tragedies that tested his resilience. He endured the devastating loss of his sons, Gerald and Sean Levert, both of whom died tragically just years apart. Gerald, a successful solo artist and member of the group LeVert, passed away in 2006 at the age of 40. Sean died in 2008 while in custody at a Cleveland jail, adding another layer of heartbreak to Eddie’s life.

In interviews, Eddie has spoken about the enduring pain of losing his sons, describing it as a wound that never heals. “It hurts just as bad as it did the day it happened,” he admitted.

The O’Jays’ big break came in 1972 when they partnered with Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, pioneers of the Philadelphia Soul sound. Their album Back Stabbers catapulted them to stardom, featuring timeless hits like “Love Train,” which became an anthem of unity and hope.

However, success came at a steep price. Internal conflicts, personal sacrifices, and the relentless pressure of fame took their toll on the group. Founding member William Powell was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1975 and passed away in 1977 at just 35 years old. His loss was a significant blow to the group, both personally and professionally.

Over the years, members of The O’Jays have faced significant health challenges. Walter Williams, Eddie’s longtime bandmate, was diagnosed with spinal stenosis, a debilitating condition that forced him to take a hiatus in 2010. With determination and support, he returned to the stage in 2012, showcasing the group’s resilience.

Eddie himself has hinted at the burdens he has carried, not just as an artist but as a father and a leader. Reflecting on his career, he has expressed both pride and sorrow, acknowledging the sacrifices he made for his family and the struggles that came with them.

Despite the challenges, The O’Jays have solidified their place as one of the most iconic R&B groups in history. Their music continues to inspire, offering messages of love, unity, and perseverance. Eddie Levert’s story is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit, proving that even in the face of unimaginable loss, one can find strength and purpose.

As Eddie, now 82, reflects on his life, his music remains a beacon of hope and resilience. Through triumphs and tragedies, his journey with The O’Jays is a reminder that the most powerful melodies often come from the deepest pain.
