Manchester United have just given fans a big surprise when the British media simultaneously reported that the team’s leadership has put goalkeeper André Onana on the transfer list in the upcoming transfer window.
This decision is said to stem from Onana’s inconsistent performance since he joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2023 for a fee of about 47 million pounds from Inter Milan. Although he was expected to be a “goalkeeper” to help improve the defense, Onana often makes mistakes in important matches, especially in the Champions League and Premier League.
A source from Old Trafford said that coach Erik ten Hag has agreed to the plan to find a new goalkeeper, while Onana is allowed to leave if there is a reasonable offer. Some clubs in Serie A and the Saudi Pro League are said to have made initial contact with the Cameroon goalkeeper’s representative.
According to The Athletic, Man United want to recoup at least £35m from this deal to reinvest in other positions, especially in attack and midfield. The list of replacement targets includes Diogo Costa (Porto) and Mike Maignan (AC Milan).
The reaction of Man United fans is divided:
Some are supportive because they think Onana has not met expectations and the team needs a more reliable goalkeeper.
Others are regretful because they believe Onana needs more time to integrate and show the form that helped him reach the Champions League final last season.
Currently, Man United has not made an official announcement, but many transfer experts believe this is a clear move that shows Onana may only be at Old Trafford for less than a season.
